Premier League wrap - Gameweek 10

Gameweek 10 was filled with surprises.  Manchester City humiliated Manchester United at Old Trafford, Everton secured a massive three points at West Ham and Brighton failed to win for the fourth week in a row against Fulham.

The weekend began with a London derby.  Crystal Palace hosted a table-topping Spurs at Selhurst Park.  Palace started well, causing Spurs serious problems and made it difficult for Postecoglu’s side to create chances.  Second half was better from Spurs.  A Joel Ward own-goal and Son Heung-Min goal put Spurs two goals up just after the hour mark.  Jordan Ayew scored a consolation goal in the 94th minute.  Spurs won 2-1.

The MoneyMan, Oliver and Dylan all correctly predicted a Spurs win.

Saturday kicked off with another London derby, this time at Stamford Bridge.  Brentford shocked the hosts.  They played the positive and threatening brand of football we have become accustomed to since their promotion to the Premier League.  Chelsea created more chances but nothing that seriously threatened Brentford’s goal.  Ethan Pinnock put the Bees in the lead in the 58th minute.  The lead was doubled by Bryan Mbeumo in the 96th minute.  Brentford won 2-0.

The  MoneyMan, Oliver and Dylan all believed Chelsea had turned a corner.  They were wrong.

Sheffield United travelled south to the Emirates where they would hope to bring something home.   Arsenal completely destroyed the Blades.  An Eddie Nketiah hat-trick, Fabio Viera penalty and late Takehiro Tomiyasu goal continued Sheffield’s status as the worst defensive side in the League.  Arsenal won 5-0.

The MoneyMan, Oliver and Dylan all correctly predicted an Arsenal win.

Bournemouth played out an interesting game with Burnley.  Both are sides in desperate need of points.  Burnley took the lead early thanks to Charlie Taylor.  They would not be able to hold it for very long.  Antoine Semenyo scored a superb solo-goal to equalize.  The game was relatively even for the rest of the 90 minutes.  Philip Billing scored the decisive goal for the Cherries.  Bournemouth won 2-1.

The MoneyMan and Dylan both correctly called a Bournemouth win.  Oliver was just off with his 1-1 prediction.

Wolves faced another tough challenge when Newcastle travelled to the Molineux.  Newcastle were favourites going into this game, but Wolves have shown this season they are capable of beating the big boys.  Callum Wilson opened the scoring just after 20 minutes.  Mario Lemina equalized 10 minutes later and it looked to be heading into half-time on even terms.  In the 49th minute of the first half, Newcastle were awarded a penalty that Wilson converted.  Wolves stayed in the fight and managed another equalizer thanks to Hwang Hee-Chan.  The final score was 2-2.

The MoneyMan, Oliver and Dylan all believed Newcastle would comfortably win this game.  Wolves spoiled the party.

Everton needed to make a statement after disappointment in the Merseyside derby while West Ham continued their surprising run of form.  West Ham never really got out the blocks.  They had good possession but were blunt going forward.  Michail Antonio was starved of any genuine service.  Everton’s best attacker Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the winner.  Everton won 1-0.

The MoneyMan, Oliver and Dylan all failed to back Everton this week.

Brighton needed to get a three-points this week after failing to win since their victory at Old Trafford over a month ago with Fulham being a tough but beatable opponent.  The Seagull’s started strong, going a goal ahead thanks to striker Evan Ferguson.  Fulham were getting dominated in possession but stayed within touching distance.  Joao Palhina equalized for the cottagers in the 65th minute.  Brighton could not make their opportunities count.  The final score was 1-1.

The MoneyMan, Oliver and Dylan all believed Brighton would cruise this one.  They were wrong.

Aston Villa have been arguably the biggest surprise this season, with Unai Emery evolving the Villains into a formidable side.  Luton have improved since the beginning of the season but they would face a difficult task at Villa Park.  John McGinn put Villa 1-0 early.  Moussa Diaby doubled the lead in the 49th minute.  A Tom Lockyer own-goal sealed the deal just after the hour mark.  Luton got on the scoresheet late thanks to an Emi Martinez own-goal.  Aston Villa won 3-1.

The MoneyMan, Oliver and Dylan all correctly backed an Aston Villa win.

Liverpool had an opportunity to go above Manchester City, albeit for a couple hours when they hosted Nottingham Forest at Anfield.  The Reds dominated from kick-off, with Forest more than happy to play a low-block and forfeit possession.  Diogo Jota scored the opener in the 31st  minute.  Just three minutes later Darwin Nunez doubled the lead.  Klopp’s side were now cruising.  Mohamed Salah scored his 8th goal of the season to make it 3-0 in the 77th minute.  Liverpool won 3-0.

The MoneyMan, Oliver and Dylan all correctly predicted a Liverpool win.

Manchester United and Manchester City both needed three-points when they faced-off at Old Trafford.  City took the lead after Erling Haaland converted a penalty just before the 30 minute-mark.  Haaland got his second less than five minutes into the second half.  United were struggling to make their mark on the game.  Phil Foden sentenced Ten Hag’s side to a home humiliation after he made it three goals to nil in the 80th minute.  Manchester City won 3-0.

The MoneyMan, Oliver and Dylan all correctly predicted a Manchester City win.

The MoneyMan and Dylan both had solid weeks, getting six calls correct.  Oliver was just behind on five correct calls.  Oliver maintains his lead, now sitting on  57.  The MoneyMan is still in second on 56 and Dylan trails in third on 53.
